Herbal and herbo-mineral medicines are been widely used in Ayurveda. It has mentioned indications covering in a broader way. Rasa Oushadhi plays an important role in Ayurveda because of its rejuvenating property along with it provides immunization, long shelf life, and greater efficacy even when given in a low dose. One such classical multi-ingredient herbo- mineral Ayurvedic formulation is Chandraprabha Vati. It has many pharmaco-therapeutical applications. It is formulated with broad spectrum activity and is indicated in various diseases like Prameha, Arbudha, Artava, Mutra Vikaras, Arshas etc. Many formulations are mentioned in the name of Chandraprabha Vati. Chandraprabha Vati is Rasayana, Balya, Tridosha Shamaka properties and also acts as catalyst. It is truly a medicine for all diseases and hence called as Sarvaroga Pranashini and is also been used in ailments of reproductive health in both men and women. Certain researches have been done regarding its hypotensive and hypoglycemic properties. It also provides immunity and strength to the body due to Rasayana. In this study an attempt is made to gather and analyze the formulation having different varieties of Chandraprabha Vati from various classics along with its insight in their ingredients, dosage, indication and mode of action and its applications.

Introduction

Ayurveda the epitome of science aims with prevention of diseases and promotion of health. Administration of drugs in compound formulation can enhance the response and were made to improve the palatability. One such formulation is Chandraprabha Vati which comes under Khalveya Rasa and they are combination of herbal and mineral products. Though been a Khalveya Rasa it preserves the properties of herbal components. The word Chandraprabha comes from the word Chandra meaning moon and Prabha means luster, so which gives luster like that of moon is called as Chandraprabha.[1]

1. To put an insight on various references and indications of Chandraprabha Vati

2. To understand the mode of action of Chandraprabha Vati.

Materials and Methods

The material is taken from various texts like Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Sharangdhara Samhita, Yogaratnakara, Rasayogasagara, Rasaratna Samucchaya, Rasendra Sara Sangraha, Bhavaprakasha, Gada Nigraha, Ayurveda Sara Sangraha, Brihat Rasarajasundaram, articles, books etc.

Method of preparation according to Sharangdhara Samhita

The Churna Dravyas are powdered and mixed well. In a vessel filled with warm water add Shudha Shilajatu and Shudha Guggulu stir and melt it. After melting keep the vessel from fire and allow it to cool. Then, add all the above powdered drugs with it and make it into a fine bolus. Add rest of Bhasma Dravyas along with Sharkara. With the mixture add little warm water and make a fine mixture. Roll the pills and keep it in shade for drying.

Discussion

Chandraprabha Vati is one of the important formulations used in the classics. It is considered as Sarva Roga Pranaashini which cures all types of diseases. There are various formulations of Chandraprabha Vati in various Samhitas. In this article 11 formulations of Chandraprabha Vati have been discussed. Rasa Yogasagara has mentioned 5 types or varieties of Chandraprabha Vati. Bharat Bhaishajya Ratnakar has mentioned references from various books.[13] In Sharangadhara Samhita 37 ingredients have been mentioned whereas Guduchi is excluded in Bhaishajya Ratnavali. According to Aadamala Chandraprabha is used as Karpura while in Vaidyaka Shabdasindhu Chandraprabha means Kachura or Bakuchi.[14] Others have mentioned Shatavari. Rasendra Sara Sangraha has mentioned two varieties of Chandraprabha Vati one in Prameha Adhikaara and other in Arsha Adhikaara which is similar to Bhavaprakasha in Vatarakta chapter.

Chandraprabha vati has Katu, Tikta, Kashaya and Madhura Rasa, Ushna Virya and Gunas like Laghu, Ushna, Tikshna and Ruksa.



It acts mainly on urinary and genitary systems. Chandraprabha Vati is mainly indicated in Prameha but according to Rasa Yogasagara 5th formulation it is indicated in Switra Kushta and Bhrihat Rasaraja Sundaram has indicated in Jwara Atisara and Arsha chapters.

According to Dosha - Chandrapabha Vati is mainly Tridoshaja more commonly Vatakapha Shamaka in nature

According to Dhatu - On analyzing the indications and properties this Vati acts on Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Medas, Asthi, Majja, Shukra Dhatus

The drugs like Trivrit, Pippalimoola, Guggulu, Yavakshara relieve anxiety & pain. Drugs having anti-inflammatory properties are Karpoora, Musta, Devadaru, Guggulu, Triphala, Ela, Shilajatu & Makshika Bhasma help in reducing the pain.[15] As it contains Loha Bhasma and Shilajatu it helps in increasing the Bala and reduce fatigue and general debility.

Vitsanga may be considered as Apana Vata Vaigunya and can be understood as constipation. Constipation can also be associated with diverticular disease. Rukshata of Pakwashaya is one of the important causes for Vitsanga and the ingredients of Chandraprabha Vati helps in Apana Anulomana thereby relieving constipation.

In Yakrut Vikara (hepatomegaly), due to Tikta Katu Rasa, Kapha Hara and Mutrala properties of Chandraprabha Vati it helps in reducing the symptoms. In Kumbha Kamala, jaundice patients end up in ascites with portal hypertension. The liver tissues are replaced by scar tissue. So, Chandraprabha Vati possesses properties like Tikta Madhura Rasa, Agni Dipana, Yakrut Vishesha and Rasayana.

In Prameha there will be Mutra Atipravritti and Chala Guna of Vata increases, so Sthira and Sthambana line of treatment should be adopted. Avarna Janya Madumeha mainly vitiates Kapha and Pitta which in turn disrupts Dhatwagni and Jataragni thereby hampering the Dhatus. Chandraprabha Vati due to its Laghu, Ruksha Guna helps in Sodhana of Bahudrava Shleshma and decreases the vitiated Kleda. Shilajatu and Guggulu have properties like Virukshna and Chedaneya which acts on Kapha Dosha and also have Rasayana properties which helps in Madhumeha.

Conclusion

Chandraprabha Vati is a herbo mineral classical formulation having wide range of indications and is efficient mostly in genito-urinary diseases. In clinical practice Chandraprabha Vati of Sharangdhara Samhita is been used widely which is also mentioned in AFI. It has many therapeutic utilities in multi system organ.
