AI Policy
Author Policy on Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies
Overview
JAIMS recognizes the evolving role of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies (“AI Tools”) in academic publishing. When used responsibly, these tools can support authors in enhancing manuscript clarity, synthesizing complex literature, and improving workflow efficiency. However, their use must never replace human expertise, critical thinking, or the authentic scholarly voice that underpins integrative medical research.
Permissible Use of AI Tools
Authors may use AI Tools to assist with:
- Literature synthesis and gap identification
- Language refinement and readability enhancement
- Structuring content and improving clarity
- Generating ideas or organizing references (with human oversight)
All AI-generated content must be critically reviewed, verified, and adapted by the author to ensure originality, accuracy, and alignment with the principles of Ayurveda and integrative medicine.
Author Responsibilities
Authors are fully accountable for the integrity and originality of their manuscripts. This includes:
- Verifying accuracy of AI-generated outputs, especially citations and factual claims
- Ensuring originality by editing and adapting AI-assisted content to reflect the author’s own insights and interpretations
- Safeguarding privacy and rights by checking the terms of use of any AI Tool employed
- Disclosing AI use transparently in the manuscript and during submission
Responsible Use of AI Tools
Authors must:
- Review the privacy policies of AI Tools to ensure protection of unpublished data and personal information
- Avoid inputting sensitive or identifiable data into AI platforms
- Refrain from using AI Tools that claim ownership or reuse rights over submitted content
- Ensure that AI-generated outputs do not restrict subsequent publication rights
Disclosure Requirements
Authors must include an AI Declaration Statement upon submission, detailing:
- The name and version of the AI Tool used
- The purpose and extent of its use
- The nature of human oversight applied
Minor editorial uses (e.g., grammar or spelling checks) do not require disclosure. However, AI use in the research process (e.g., data analysis, literature review) must be described in the Methods section.
Authorship Guidelines
AI Tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship implies intellectual contribution, accountability, and ethical responsibility - attributes that cannot be fulfilled by AI. All listed authors must:
- Approve the final manuscript
- Be accountable for its content
- Ensure compliance with JAIMS’ publication ethics
Use of AI in Figures, Images, and Artwork
JAIMS does not permit the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools to create or alter images in submitted manuscripts. This includes:
- Adding, removing, or modifying features within images
- Generating graphical abstracts or cover art without prior approval
Acceptable adjustments include:
- Brightness, contrast, or color balance (if they do not obscure original data)
Exception: If AI-assisted imaging is part of the research methodology (e.g., biomedical imaging), it must be:
- Clearly described in the Methods section
- Reproducible and transparent
- Accompanied by pre-AI versions or raw data if requested
Cover art created using AI may be considered only with editorial permission, proper rights clearance, and accurate attribution.
